Brainstorming, the first step towards success

You may have heard this word before or you may have already used this method: brainstorming.
You can't even imagine how much it has helped on hundreds of occasions and throughout history since it has been known as such. Exactly, since 1939, thanks to Alex Osborn, who years later formalized the term through his book Applied Imagination, in 1954.
But, exactly, what is brainstorming? Brainstorming! We all know that, right?
It is a work tool, method or formula through which different ideas are contributed that, finally, will derive into new concepts. The objective is the generation of original ideas in a relaxed environment, since brainstorming requires a lot of concentration.
And, to carry out a brainstorming session, what steps should I follow?, you may ask. The following:
- Be clear about what topic is going to be discussed.
- Choose a spokesperson or person who will write down the ideas on paper or a whiteboard.
- Ideas begin to be contributed, without stopping to assess whether they are suitable or not (they all are).
- Remove repeated ideas and list the remaining ones.
- Brainstorming ends when no more ideas arise.
- Organize ideas by importance and assess whether any are not viable in order to discard them.
These are the 6 most important steps to follow, but you can take a look at the Decalogue of the good brainstormer, in which they are expanded.
A good brainstorming session should follow some rules:
- Suspend judgment and avoid any kind of criticism towards the ideas. ALL are valid, as we said before.
- Freedom of thought. Whatever comes to mind, think about it out loud. Who knows what that will lead to?
- In this case, quantity is very important. The more ideas, the better.
- As if the ideas that arise in the first instance were not enough, it will be a plus to combine and multiply them.
A very important issue to address in companies is the brainstorming method. It is always a good option to use it from time to time to give a fresh and new air to the brand, especially in times of crisis.
As a result of a brainstorming session, ideas as important as implementing new services in a company, expanding the sector, and seizing growth opportunities in the market can arise…
But, are you an entrepreneur or startup and still don't know where to start? Then pay attention, because brainstorming can be... your best bet! Here's how you can implement this formula in your new project:
Bring together people who participate
You should always have a team. Even if they are not people who want to start a business with you, if they are friends, they will surely want to lend you a hand with this.
It may seem easy, but you have to be clear that doing a brainstorming session requires concentration and professionalism. Surely wonderful ideas will come out of this.
Write down all the ideas that come up
Even if they may seem absurd at first. You never know from what group of ideas a new project might arise…
Do you know what your company will be, but not how to launch it or what services to offer? A brainstorming session is the solution!
Value the ideas and go for it!
Write down the advantages and disadvantages of each idea that has sprung from your brilliant minds. In the end, you have to discard the ones that are not profitable.
