From Aticco we celebrate November 19, International Day of Women Entrepreneurs, a date chosen and promoted by the United Nations that since 2014 emphasizes the need to give visibility to women entrepreneurs around the world.
»A woman needs £500 a year and a room of her own to write in.» lhe great Virginia Woolf thus emphasized in her essay »A Room of One's Own» the need for a favorable environment and support for women in a society where they had hardly any opportunities.
Some time later, the role of women in the workplace has evolved, but we are still in a context where gender inequality affects women, families and organizations. In the workplace there is a wage gap between men and women where the salary gap reaches up to 23% in Spain, so it is crucial to continue to raise awareness in society about the obstacles that women face when it comes to entrepreneurship. One of the keys to reducing this gender gap is to ensure that all managerial positions are adequately trained to know what behaviors and actions are required, and that they are aware of changes in measures.
Although the rate of female entrepreneurship is lower than that of men (46% of women compared to 53% of men), the gap has been narrowing for the sixth consecutive year, with nine female entrepreneurs out of every ten in Spain, thus surpassing the European average.
The trend is on the rise, with more than half a million women running their own business. What has driven this growth? One of the factors is undoubtedly the generational change. The average profile is that of a young woman (no more than 34 years old), she has completed higher education and her project is focused on innovation. An example is the Fintech sector where 66% of employees are women. It should be noted that 45% of women create their business for the benefit of society, one of the trends in female entrepreneurship is to create non-profit companies or social reason.
In Spain we have a varied entrepreneurial ecosystem with outstanding talent, where women have a strong presence. Proof of this are the leaders who have demonstrated that they can create and run successful businesses:

Women face great challenges in their development as professionals and are clearly underrepresented, especially in the digital and technology sector. In recent years we have seen an exponential growth of organizations that position them and give greater visibility to their projects. This is the case of Women In Tech, an organization formed by women to support the visibility of female talent that is responsible for promoting new career models for women and achieving greater female representation on boards of directors, among others. Girls in TechGirls in Tech, an organization dedicated to eliminating the gender gap in the technology sector, also supports inclusiveness with more than 60,000 members to date. Another network that is also committed to growth in entrepreneurship, is Net Mentora the largest non-profit association of entrepreneurs and businesswomen in Europe, dedicated to supporting entrepreneurship, with the aim of creating companies to generate local employment.
These are just a few examples of women who are fighting to balance the scales. Today we highlight the courage of these women who are moving forward with their projects in the face of great obstacles, and we celebrate the fact that the sector is changing little by little, despite the great work that still needs to be done.
