Barcelona as a Smart City: The SCEWC24 Agenda

Currently, the concept of Smart City has become fundamentally important in urban development. These cities, managed intelligently, strive to be sustainable from an economic, social, and environmental perspective. Barcelona is a benchmark in this area, where technology and sustainability intertwine to create a more habitable and efficient urban environment. In this context, Aticco is proud to be a partner of the Smart City Expo World Congress. This congress will bring together experts and leaders from around the world to explore innovative solutions that transform our cities into more connected and sustainable spaces.
What is a Smart City?
The concept of Smart City refers to cities that use technology to manage their resources efficiently and sustainably. These cities are evaluated on a series of key aspects that include transportation and infrastructure, energy and lighting, urban management and technology, as well as connectivity. Through the implementation of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), Smart Cities seek to optimize their services, improve the quality of life of their inhabitants, and foster a healthier and more accessible urban environment.
Barcelona: One of the Best Smart Cities in the World
Barcelona has been recognized as the third best Smart City in the world, only behind Singapore and London according to Juniper Research 2022. Since 2012, the Barcelona City Council has worked to implement technologies that improve public services and, in general, the urban experience.
Innovations in Barcelona
- Public Transportation: The city has incorporated hybrid buses and has installed solar panels on the shelters. In addition, the routes have been modified to make them more efficient and faster, which has transformed urban mobility.
- Waste Management: The installation of smart containers has significantly improved waste collection. These containers not only reduce odors and noise pollution but also allow for real-time monitoring of waste levels, optimizing the collection process.
- Public Lighting: Barcelona has modernized its public lighting system with LED technology and a network of sensors that provide data on pollution and other environmental factors. This not only saves energy but also allows for better management of public spaces.
These innovations have not only made Barcelona a model of efficiency, but have also improved the quality of life of its inhabitants, fostering a healthier and more sustainable urban environment.
