Barcelona as a Smart City: The Agenda of the SCEWC24

At present, the concept of Smart City has acquired a fundamental importance in urban development. These intelligently managed cities strive to be sustainable from economic, social and environmental perspectives. Barcelona is a benchmark in this field, where technology and sustainability are intertwined to create a more livable and efficient urban environment. Barcelona has been recognized as the third best Smart City in the world, behind only Singapore and London according to Juniper Research 2022. Since 2012, Barcelona City Council has been working to implement technologies that improve public services and, in general, the urban experience.

  • Public TransportationThe city has incorporated hybrid buses and has installed solar panels on bus shelters. In addition, routes have been modified to make them more efficient and faster, which has transformed urban mobility.
  • Waste ManagementWith the installation of intelligent containershas significantly improved waste collection. These containers not only reduce odors and noise pollution, but also allow real-time monitoring of the waste level, optimizing the collection process.
  • Public LightingBarcelona has modernized its public lighting system with LED technology. LED TECHNOLOGY technology and a network of sensors sensors that provide data on pollution and other environmental factors. This not only saves energy, but also enables better management of public spaces.
