Women in Blockchain: Barriers Up for Debate
Are there gender- or age-related barriers in blockchain technology? Women who are experts in blockchain weigh in.
To address this and other questions, throughout the month of March at Aticco we have organized a series of events on the role of women in the professional world and across various industries.
The first of these Startup Talks, organized in partnership with Upbizor, brought together four experts from the gaming industry. Now, in the second of these talks, we’re handing the mic over to a group of curious and innovative women who are blazing a trail in blockchain technology.
These were:
- Teresa Garriga: Consultant for Digital Transformation in Businesses.
- Marina Teixidor: CMO & Co-founder of Wohee
- Valeria Caracciolo: Business Development EMEA at Coinfabrick
The session, titled “Women on Blockchain: Removing the Barriers”, was moderated by Montse Guardia Guell, co-founder and CEO of Big Onion.
The Gender Gap and Women in the Blockchain Ecosystem
For Marina Teixidor, entrepreneur and co-founder of Wohee, a SaaS startup based on blockchain technology: “Although there are more and more women entrepreneurs and developers, there’s still an educational aspect to it. We need to start making changes through education and break down the existing stereotypes that say if you’re a woman, you should go into the humanities, and if you’re a man, you should go into STEM. I’d like to think that this is gradually changing.”
Teresa Garriga, on the other hand, believes that blockchain is an environment conducive to greater equality because, as it is a very new technology, “we all start from the same point.”
The Ethics Behind Blockchain
The question often arises regarding the many potential uses of technological advancements. Blockchain faces a barrier to entry in the form of a lack of understanding, and as Marina argued, there is still a negative connotation associated with asset speculation in the collective imagination. Even so, Wohee’s CMO believes that: “once all of its real-world applications are understood, this barrier will disappear on its own.”
Valeria Caracciolo added that we should view technology as a tool that can be used in various ways.
This issue was one of the main topics of the debate, and in fact, the moderator, Montse Guardia, when asked by the press in attendance, argued that how the technology is used depends on the ethics of the developers behind it and concluded:
“Technology is created by humans.”
