The Future of Remote Work: 7 Strategies for Optimizing Productivity
Many office workers are now working remotely. This presents an opportunity to work from home. However, it’s important to know how to make the most of it. Optimizing your time, tasks, and schedule are the keys to increasing productivity at work.
7 Tips for Optimizing Time and Productivity When Working Remotely
- Establish a routine and be disciplined
Working remotely from home or outside the office— teleworking—requires a new adjustment. Find a spot in your home with natural light, away from noise, and where you can focus. At first, it will take some time to find your rhythm, establish a routine, and stay disciplined. That’s why it’s essential to set a daily goal, complete that task, and avoid distractions.
- Keeping the News Under Control
While the information is excellent, it can have a negative effect. Sometimes, instead of easing our emotions, news about the current pandemic can make them worse, increasing our levels of stress and anxiety.
That's why it's important not to check the news every five minutes and to choose your news sources carefully. Check them at the beginning and end of the day. Consider setting aside a specific time to read the news, get advice, and understand the issues.

- Don't work from your bed
You really don't want to bring work to bed, or you'll start associating your bedroom with work—and, honestly, who wants that?
It will be harder to focus on the tasks at hand, and you’re much more likely to not give 100% of yourself. Down the road, this kind of attitude can lead to a vicious cycle where you’ll feel guilty for not getting up and doing all the work you’d like to. It really isn’t worth it.
- Setting Up a Home Office
It doesn't have to be an entire room; it can be a corner of the living room or a spot on the balcony or in the garden, if you have one. The goal is to have a space inside your home that you associate directly with work. It will be easier to establish a routine, and it will help you maintain some boundaries between your personal life and remote work.
If you can't work from home, we recommend finding a coworking space so you can make the most of your workday.
- Socializing, virtually
One of the main challenges associated with remote work is isolation. If you find that you’re losing the social connection you had with your coworkers in the office, or if you just need a little conversation to motivate yourself to work, consider using group chats or video calls more often. Slack is an option that many companies use as an internal chat platform for remote work. They call it the “engine of your work.”
Many companies have created virtual workspaces where people can log in and log out as needed.
- Take regular breaks
Take breaks throughout the day just as you would at the office. Get up, read, have a light snack, do some deep-breathing exercises, keep an eye on your kids, spend time with your partner, take care of your pet, or do a quick workout at home or a yoga routine. Remote work gives you the opportunity to do things you can’t do in a traditional office. This also applies if you’re a freelancer, so it’s very important to understand what freelancing entails and the advantages of working for yourself.
- Get enough sleep
Sleep and mental health are closely linked. Lack of sleep can negatively affect our psychological well-being, including stress and depression, among other issues. Take advantage of the fact that you no longer have to go to the office, and use that time to do things for yourself.
